The story of this high resolution print of a custom made cello

Since a couple of years I follow the work of instrument maker Rob van den Broek. In this high resolution print you can see his very special custom made cello instrument for Cello Octet Amsterdam. We came in closer contact via mutual friends at concerts and a while later I payed him a visit in his studio in the low lands of the Dutch Flevopolder. His instruments captivate me during live shows, and it is very inspiring to witness the instruments being made. Rob agreed to let me take very long exposure images in his studio, so I installed a few pinhole cameras. The idea is to capture the making of a large custom. made instrument that was to premiere in the spring of 2021.

Custom made instrument

The work in this image shows the result, a new, very large custom made instrument on stage at TivoliVredenburg. During the time of the capture, the instrument is constructed. The performance that followed is the premiere of the music piece by composer Maxim Shalygin. Cello Octet Amsterdam and solist Maya Friedman magically perform the instruments in a magical show of music light and movement. The story of half a year’s work on a custom made cello instrument, captured in one image.

This image was taken with expired film from the 2000’s in an Agfa Box Camera from the 1930’s.
