In the Hornsund fjord in the southern part Spitsbergen, Polish researchers are working all year round. It is a difficult place to reach so I had to plan my recordings far before the camera’s were placed. First I had to make sure the camera’s were sent in time to Longyearbyen, the capital of Spitsbergen. A helicopter flies from there to Hornsund every few months, delivering goods and mail. Luckily I could arrange all this in collaboration with station manager Piotr Zagórsky by social media. He guided me through the process and helped me installing the camera’s. A number of pinhole camera was placed over the area and the shutter open for ca. 150 days. We don’t know the exact number of days of exposure as these data have not been available yet.
This image is created for the project Touch base, arctic solargraphy. A global ‘science meets art’ photography project I conducted during 2019-2020.
