While visiting Dunedin Polytechnic School of Art (New Zealand) for a lecture about the project Touch base, I had some time to look for landscaping locations and I could drive out to the Otago 87 road. Along this road you can find some old mining towns like Middlemarch, Ranfurly and Naseby that are worth exploring. In Naseby I was walking around the reconstructed buildings and imagined myself back in the time of the gold rush. What I hope to do with this type of photography is to transport you into a different time. This location seemed the ideal place to try and recreate that atmosphere of the 1860’s.
This image was created with an Agfa box camera from the 1920’s, using expired Agfa Film from the 1980’s. This creates the base image with the impressionistic look. After developing and scanning I choose a frame, in this case 5:4 and use brush up the image where I see fit digitally.
