In the far north, in a remote area of Greenland you can find the research station for Zackenberg Ecological Research Operations. Zackenberg Research Station is situated in the High Arctic in an area with continuous permafrost. The study area comprises the drainage basin of the river Zackenbergelven, with a total size of c. 500 km2. A great variety of biotopes like ponds, fens, heaths, fell field plateaus and grasslands occur within the core study area. Muskoxen, lemming, Arctic fox, and Arctic hare are among the common mammals in the area, while polar bear and Arctic wolf are occasional visitors.

This image was created for the project Touch base, arctic solargraphy. A global ‘science meets art’ photography project I conducted during 2019-2020.

If you buy a high resolution print or limited edition of this image, 10% of the profit will be donated to APECS. This is an organisation which supports early career scientists in their research. Many members of APECS helped me in creating the images in the Touch base project. We all depend on future science. By donating some of my earnings I can do something back to support them.

Music

Quinsin Nachoff (saxophone) & Nathalie Bonin (violin) have adopted this image to be part of the art work for their album Pivotal Arc. It is a very great honour to have it feature on their LP, CD and digital distribution.
